STATEMENT

It is quite shocking that Zee news is targating Gauhar Raza, a well known and widely respected scientist, poet, film maker, calling him anti-national and part of the Afzal-loving poets’ gang. It aired some clippings of the Shankar-Shad Mushaira, an annual feature of Delhi cultural scene held recently and signled out Gauhar Raza, kept airing his picture repeatedly in its evening news programmes and attacked him by labeling him as ’DESH-DROHI’ anti-national.

Singling out of individuals and creating a mass-frenzy against them using the medium of TV is a dangerous trend. We saw Zee TV doing it in the case of the students of the JNU also. They aired doctored videos which became the basis of arrest and harassment of Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban. They have not yet apologised for this highly irresponsible act. Despite their bluff being called, they have persisted.

This time the Zee news has picked a respected name like Gauhar Raza as its target. It is criminal and unacceptable. We call upon the Press Council of India and the Broadcast Association to take note of this criminality and initiate necessary action against the channel. We also appeal to the governments of Delhi and the centre to initiate criminal proceeding against the channel for putting a citizen’s life under threat.

We strongly condemn this unethical and criminal act of the Zee news and demand an unconditional apology from them. .
