Supreme Court Grants Bail To Professor GN Saibaba!
New York, NY
4 Apr 2016 — In a verdict bringing much relief earlier today, the Supreme Court of India granted Delhi University Professor G.N. Saibaba bail.
The bench of Justices J.S. Khehar and C. Nagappan stated that the Maharashtra State had been "extremely unfair" to the professor and reprimanded the state counsel for opposing bail plea thus far. When the state counsel asked for Saibaba’s custody until the end of the trial, the court condemned the idea of such torture saying "Do you want a pound of flesh?"
The court’s judgment has held up a core principle of humanity and "innocent until proven guilty"; hopefully such cases can help influence those of countless others undertrial prisoners languishing in Indian jails.
