Everyday Racism and Prejudice in India: Statement by Association of African Students in India (AASI) on 27 March 2017

[As student dies, five Nigerians are accused of cannibalism by locals, charged with murder (see news report). The incident happened in Greater Noida. The police arrest the African students and finaly releases them for lack of evidence. But these students face widespread racism in everyday lives in India. Here is a statement released on facebook on 27 March 2017]

Statement by The Association of African Students in India

The Association of African students in India is calling on the government of India to taking concrete steps to protect the lives and properties of all African students in India, and especially in Uttar Pradesh following the recent false allegations laid on five Nigerian students.

We are tired of the appeasement and promises made by the Indian government and therefore we will be taking stringent actions.

Failure to secure the lives of African students and to ensure maximum security in areas where African students live, we will write to the African Union to cut all bilateral trade with India.

We will ensure that all the local media houses in our respective countries get details of the growing racism which African students are facing in India.

We will ensure that a detailed report on the barbaric racism African students are facing in India is sent to the high levels of all African governments and heads of state.

We will ask African students in our respective countries to stop making India their study destination with immediate effect.

We will call for a nationwide protest inviting all international media houses.

Samuel T. Jack
President (AASI)
Association of African Students in India

Hate Crimes Against Africans Continue As Another Man Thrashed Badly By A Mob In Greater Noida

28th March 2017, 03:40PM IST

A videoof an African man being beaten up by Indians at Ansal Plaza mall in Greater Noida is making rounds on the internet. The man can be seen lying on the floor being beaten by around 18-20 Indians using steel dustbins. The brawl reportedly took place for no reason.

The video, uploaded by Association Of African Students In India on Facebook, is being shared massively on social media.

“This is most disturbing. Wonder why the security of this mall did not intervene or call the cops? Also, so many people are just watching! Most disgusting, Indians have no right to condemn hate crimes abroad when they can tolerate this in their own country. Horrible!”, reads a comment by a Facebook user.

“Indians are the most racist….u guys are saying about Africa… Dey can’t tolerate dere own citizens… I.e northeasterns as Chinese n Nepali… N some dalit community as untouchables… N dey talk about racism in USA…pity such citizens”, a user commented on the post.

A Nigerian student, had in a tweet, pleaded with Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj for swift action, saying that living in Noida has become a “life threatening issue”.

On Monday, hundreds of local residents were marching in protest against the death of a Class 12 student, when some turned violent and starting attacking the Nigerians shopping in the area.

The attackers alleged that the deceased Manish Khari, was drugged by Africans who live in the area. He later died of heart attack after a suspected overdose on Saturday.

There have been several instances every now and then about attacks on the African community in India, prompting the government to give assurance of their safety in the country.
