Restriction on Pahela Baishakh festival a medieval thinking: Sultana Kamal
2016-04-12 00:00:00

Terming the restrictions on Pahela Baishakh celebration programme as reflection of “medieval thinking”, rights activist Sultana Kamal demands withdrawing of ban. “The decision will have to be canceled soon, as it is like an attempt to degrade the constitution,” said Sultana Kamal, convener of Nari Nirapatta Jote, an alliance for women’s security. She was briefing the media at Jatiya Press Club on the alliance’s preparations for celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year. Unexpectedly the government has announced that no outdoor programme will be allowed after 5:00pm on Pahela Baishakh but it is government’s constitutional commitment to ensure people’s security for 24 hours the she said. So government has no right to slap any restriction on Pahela Baishakh programme. / GS
