Ahead of a mass protest by some Civil Society Organisations(CSO) the Department of State Security has hurried released a detained journalist in its custody.

The journalist, Tony Ezimakor, is the Abuja Bureau Chief of Independent newspaper. He was arrested last week by the DSS for publishing a story on the alleged payment of $2 million to the Boko Haram terrorists for the release of some of the abducted Chibok girls.

The DSS let him go on Tuesday night, as the organisations had finalized plans to storm its headquarters Wednesday over the continued detention of Ezimakor, without granting him access to his lawyers or family members.

There are claims that he was asked to disclose his source of information as a condition for his release.

One of the organizers of the planned protest, Deji Adeyanju had announced on his Twitter handle, that “SSS bows to pressure, releases Journalist Tony Ezimakor. We will not allow Nigeria to slide to the era of Decree 4 of 1984.

“PROTEST in front of their headquarters tomorrow morning is herby suspended.

“Thanks to everyone†.
