Naseeruddin Shah: ‘I Don’t Flaunt the Fact That I’m Muslim nor Am I Apologetic About It’

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah had condemned a section of Indian Muslims celebrating the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, calling it “dangerous”.

The 71-year-old actor said in the video that those celebrating the resurgence of the Taliban should ask themselves whether they want to reform their religion or live with barbarian values of the past few centuries.

His statement led to furious debates on social media, with some Muslims accusing him of making sweeping comments that play into the hands of Islamophobes while others have hailed him for his forthrightness.

In an interview to Arfa Khanum Sherwani, The Wire’s senior editor, Shah discusses the fallout from his statement and elaborates on what he was trying to convey.
