#FreeAssange Vigil and outreach outside Houses of Parliament – Neale Hanvey MP joins our struggle

15 June 2022

Around 22 Julian Assange supporters gathered at the Mother of all Parliaments to lobby Members and the public during PMQT. Much support at the gates with hundreds of flyers handed out and engagement with MPs Caroline Lucas. Even Jacob Rees-Mogg took an #Assange letter addressed to all MPs

Maxine meets Alba MP Neale Hanvey to discuss how to Free Julian Assange , which he describes as ‘a stain on democracy, a stain on free speech’. Watch Maxine’s interview with Maxine below.

We are asking from MPs that we meet to arrange a visit by MPs to see Mr. Assange has been stonewalled by the Ministry of Justice. This affront to elected representatives requires a much more public challenge. Although there is a lapsed EDM on this topic, it will not bring the necessary public attention. It is worth recalling that when the BBC was refused a prison interview with Babar Ahmad, the BBC legally challenged this in the High Court and won that right.

Take every opportunity (over and above EDMs) to raise the case of Mr. Assange in the Commons and Lords and any relevant committees. The Human Rights Committee, for example, has a current inquiry on freedom of expression, but appears to have not met on this topic since 2020 and has no events scheduled.

Organise a House of Commons meeting inviting external speakers to show how important this case is.

Take every opportunity to publicise the case on twitter or other communication means.

Ask their constituents to: Write to the Home Secretary and PM

Sign the Amnesty International Petition or ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ petition on their respective websites.
