  While being moved by the generous intentions which motivated these symbolic actions, we nevertheless take distance from some of these which, in fact, will further increase the alas already prevaling confusion between personal religious faith and communal identity politics. While indeed solidarity is very much needed, we call on well-meaning people to select other symbols when showing solidarity with the Christchurch massacre’s victims. Symbols which would not lead to ideological compromising with the Muslim far-right, under the pretext of fighting the anti-Muslims xenophobic far-right. It would be a major disaster if the racist homicides perpetrated in Christchurch against Muslim believers would, in the end, benefit the Muslim extreme-right. Let’s make sure it does not happen.

  Parmi les signes de cette dégradation des droits de l’homme, il y a la condamnation à cinq ans de prison ferme, dimanche passé, de Slimane Bouhafs, à Beni Ourtilane (Sétif) pour « atteinte aux préceptes de l’islam et propos indécents à l’égard du Prophète ». De l’avis de nombreux juristes, c’est « la liberté de conscience qui est jugée ». Bouhafs est connu pour avoir opté pour la religion chrétienne depuis longtemps, ce qu’il assume publiquement. Depuis la scandaleuse arrestation de Habiba K. à Tiaret, en 2008, qui avait défrayé la chronique à l’époque poursuivie pour « pratique non autorisée d’un culte non musulman », de nombreux citoyens sont persécutés et poursuivis devant les tribunaux. La condamnation de M. Bouhafs vient s’ajouter à celle de Rachid Fodil de M’sila, condamné également pour « offense au Prophète et atteinte aux préceptes de l’islam ».

  Dans une vidéo publiée jeudi 8 août et supprimée ce vendredi, Abdel en vrai, chroniqueur pour AJ+, prétend dévoiler le « côté obscur » des Lumières. Au prix de contresens et de raccourcis, le vidéaste de la succursale d’Al-Jazira y réécrit l’histoire des idées afin de démontrer le lien entre les penseurs du XVIII^e siècle et le suprémacisme blanc.

  Last year, Badawi was found guilty of insulting Islamic values, “promoting liberal thought” and “going beyond the realm of obedience” by suggesting the kingdom should become more democratic. Today, the country’s Supreme Court upheld a sentence against him that involves 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison. His wife said she was told her husband’s lashing would start again next Friday.

  Over 721 academicians and experts including 51 Vice Chancellors of various central and state universities attended a two-day workshop organised by the RSS over the weekend hosted in the national capital. The aim was to redress the absence of “Indian-ness from our education system.” Many such programs are to follow.Education has long been in the RSS’s crosshairs as it realises its potential to influence the ideology of a younger generation. The main thrust of the RSS these days seems to be to ‘reform’ education and purge it of all Leftist influences.
