  Stasa Zajovic from Women in Black said at the event that they were asking for the facts about Srebrenica, determined by courts which have classified the mass killings as genocide, to be respected in Serbia. Serbian officials reject the genocide definition. “We consider the prime minister and president of Serbia most responsible for propagating a climate in which any kind of responsibility and respect for the verdicts of international courts is rejected. We think it is necessary to change this, not only because it is Serbia’s obligation as part of EU integration but because is represents basic respect for the genocide victims.”

  The role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in the freedom movement against the British rule, was not an issue in the first five decades of independent India. The project of constructing its role in the freedom movement started only after a seasoned RSS swayamsevak, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, took over as the Prime Minister of India in 1998. With Narendra Bhai Modi, who identifies himself as a “Hindu nationalist,” became the Prime Minister in 2014, this project got a great push.

  Shajar was the second female ruler in Islamic history (coming a few years after Razia Sultan) and the first who was not originally from a noble family. Her extraordinary legacy as a slave girl who rose to become the Sultan of Egypt and initiated over a century of Mamluk rule, has been memorialised in folklore, such as the heroic poem Sirat al-Zahir Baibars, expressing her symbolic importance as an extraordinary female ruler.
