It is impossible to understand what is happening in Ukraine today without some knowledge of its past, and to fill in some essential features of that past.

Ukraine: Russian White Guards in the Donbass
10 March, by siawi3There is no revolution in the Donbass, not even a mass movement. They exist only in the propaganda of the supporters of an armed separatist movement, led by far-right nationalists. Imported from Russia, they seek the restoration of the Tsarist Empire. The Kremlin supports this reincarnation of the White Guards and the Black Hundreds who are destabilizing Ukraine; but it seems that it is also afraid of them

Russian Orthodoxy and Christian Nationalism
11 March, by siawi3The church divinizes the state, so that whatever the state does is “holy.” The religion gives supernatural sanction to the status quo, just as pagan religions tend to do. Thus, whatever the state does–invade the Ukraine, shell civilians, exploit its citizens–is justified by bestowing on the government an aura of sanctity. Therefore, the church is complicit in manipulating citizens to acquiesce in their leaders’ tyranny.

We, as Indians, Must Not Shy Away From ’Nationalism’
15 March, by siawi3Can we afford to allow people in India, who feel Indian and wish to express their Indian identity, to think that narrow-minded hyper-nationalism and nationalism are one and the same? The current extremist appropriation of the language of nationalism needs to be challenged rather than succumbed to.

The Radical Left Solidarity That Ukrainians Don’t Need ‘No war but the class war’. Not a very useful slogan
21 March, by siawi3Learning from experience in Ex-Yugoslavia: “Taking Sides against ethnic cleansing”. We took sides, while all around us in the UK and Europe people who were guided by “No war but the Class war” did nothing but issue sermons about not taking sides and the unity of the working class – empty, meaningless nonsense.

Alexey Sakhnin: What is happening to the Russian consciousness?
21 March, by siawi3Even for the most vocal proponents of the Russian government, the connection between the war and the socio-economic crash is quite apparent. Tremendous social inequality became the foundation for the dictatorship because, alongside their control over property, the poor majority had lost its political voice. Shameful nationalist and xenophobic blather have been used throughout these years by most of the regimes that have come to power upon the ruins of the USSR. The Russian working class will have to change their country entirely to stop this war. And yet, only the Russian left can utter it. There’s no one else.

Ukrainian socialist: ‘The future of demilitarisation lies in stopping Russia’s war machine now’
11 April, by siawi3Russia’s invasion has created a major threat to the existence of Ukraine as an independent state. Without doubt, we can say that the current war is the most devastating war we have seen since World War II. About 6000 civilians have been killed. Military actions have taken the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers from both sides. About 5 million people have lost their jobs, mainly because so many workplaces have being bombed. Nearly 10 million people have been forced to flee for safety and hundreds of thousands have lost their homes. The most specific thing leftists can do is to fundamentally shift their organisation’s analysis of the war. They should not tolerate Putin’s imperialism and should fully support the right of Ukrainian people to self-determination.

India: Ambassadors of Hindutva: How Saffron Has Seeped Into Our Diplomatic Space
27 July, by siawi3Many diplomats said they personally felt excluded from this narrative of “authentic” Indianness, marked by an aggressive push in favour of Hindi and a marginalisation of English in diplomatic communication.
