Le RSS compterait plus de 5 millions de membres et défend l’idée que l’Inde appartient aux hindous. Il a été interdit plusieurs fois depuis l’indépendance de l’Inde, en vain. C’est d’ailleurs l’un de ses anciens membres qui a assassiné Gandhi en 1948, l’accusant de sympathies musulmanes. Il a également été interdit après avoir incité à la destruction, en 1992, de la mosquée de Babri, qui avait entraîné d’effroyables émeutes.
