Except for the BJP spokesperson on Kashmir Affairs, we did not meet a single person who supported the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370. On the contrary, most people were extremely angry, both at the abrogation of Article 370 (and 35A) and at the manner in which it had been done. Anger and fear were the dominant emotions we encountered everywhere.

The “Aryan Race”
25 September 2019, by siawi3What we know today is that we are a multi-source civilisation, not a single-source one, drawing our cultural impulses, traditions and practices from a variety of heredities and migration histories. We are all Indians. We are all migrants. And we are all mixed.

India: ‘Are you a Mulla or one of us?’
25 June 2015, by siawi3geographies centuries old have been permanently altered in places like Gujarat or Muzaffarnagar. Villages have turned their back on their own neighbours of several generations, and have stoked the hatred. Is this the future of India – a state of permanent fear and tension for religious, ethnic, caste, or linguistic minorities bullied by an intolerant majority, egged on by venal politicians and an ineffective state machinery?

India: The Hindu Right’s witch hunting of human rights defender Teesta Setalvad
15 July 2015, by siawi3It is by now an open secret that activists working for justice and truth with regard to the pogrom called ‘Gujarat Riots’ have earned the hatred and animosity of the Modi government; which does not hesitate to employ official state power to indulge in a witch-hunt.

UK: ’Fighting machetes with pens’
13 July 2015, by siawi3My late-husband, Dr. Avijit Roy and I were Bangladeshi-American citizens and Humanists, and we are the recent victims of Islamic terrorism in Bangladesh. Avijit created the first online freethinking platform in Bangla called ‘Muktomona’ ( which means ‘Freethinker’) in 2001. On the 26th of February 2015, when we were leaving the well-lit, crowded book fair to get back to our car, Avijit and I were brutally attacked by Islamic fundamentalists. We were stabbed repeatedly with machetes on the side of the road. The area was surrounded by police officers and video cameras and thousands and thousands of people. Nobody came to help us, the police stood by. Avijit was perhaps the most prominent victim of these machete-wielding assailants, but he was neither the first, nor the last such victim. Since his murder at the end of February, Islamist fundamentalists have successfully killed another two humanist bloggers and writers in Bangladesh in very similar circumstances.

India: the Hinduisation of India through compulsory yoga
25 June 2015, by siawi3Sundry political swamis have announced that anyone who disapproves of compulsory yoga should leave the country. So now yoga is essential not only to Hinduism but to national pride. Refusal to submit to this rule is treachery. RSS representatives in government are attempting to enforce their version of Indian culture by the compulsory unification of thought and culture.
