UNICEF released a report yesterday. showing that the number of children involved in suicide bombing has risen tenfold in the last year in the Lake Chad region, which includes Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. One in every five suicide bombings is perpetrated by a child. Three-quarters of them are girls as young as eight years old. They are victims of slavery and rape. Military forces in all four countries have made gains, liberating areas and people, but the abductions continue. After the 2014 abduction, over 2,000 women and girls have been abducted since then in about four countries, not just Nigeria." Among children who have been freed, some are ostracized, others killed, out of fear that they might turn against their communities.

A Sudanese teenager killed her rapist, and Muslim women are fighting for her life
11 May 2018, by siawi3Noura’s story is perhaps not unusual in a world where intimate partner violence is rife. However, there is something about Noura’s case that is indicative of a wider truth. The lawyers working on the case in Washington DC are members of the Sudanese diaspora, and word of the case reached me through another Sudanese writer’s Instagram and blogposts. Growing protest in Sudan and in the Arab region against Noura being sentenced to death
13 May 2018, by siawi3“A married woman must obey her husband. If the husband has paid the dowry and if he provides a suitable home, his wife can not refuse sexual intercourse,†Article 91 of the Sudanese Family Law states. The Sudanese No to Suppression of Women Initiative has launched a campaign against the ruling, and press for the criminalisation of marital rape as a form of violence against women. Many Arab women’s rights activists consider the condemnation unjust as well. With the hashtag #JusticeForNoura they protest the fact that she has not been granted the right to self-defence against sexual assaults. “Many people are citing Sharia law and saying that sex with her is his “right by marriage” - forgetting that marriage WITHOUT consent is illegitimate in Islam. Also, allowing other males into your bedroom to assist in raping your wife, is far from anything Islam condones.â€
