25th June, 2020 marks the 45th year of the Declaration of the infamous Emergency Declaration of Indira Gandhi. It is a day remembered as the day in 1975, when the Indian Government waged a war on its own people, suspending the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution and turning India into an authoritarian country. 25th June, 1975 also symbolises the intense dedication to democracy, rule of law and the Indian Constitution showed by thousands of ordinary citizens, who despite being illegally arrested, imprisoned and tortured, chose not to be cowed down by Indira Gandhi’s police state and instead defiantly fought to reclaim the Constitution and democracy.

India: Stop criminalizing free speech, protect journalism
28 June 2020, by siawi3The media is a vital part of democracy and plays an important role in holding power to account. India has had a proud tradition of free and fearless journalism, which played a very important role in the freedom struggle and this should be nurtured. A pandemic and the subsequent lockdown should not be excuses to clamp down on the media.

Turkey: The bravery of Kurdish women journalists
29 June 2020, by siawi3Turkey is becoming infamous for being “the world’s biggest jailer of professional journalists”. But there are also tens of thousands of political prisoners – activists, musicians, academics, human rights defenders, writers, politicians, and, well, anyone critical of president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s fascistic AKP government – who have been found guilty of charges similar to Canözer. And, terrifyingly, increasing numbers are being sentenced for “insulting the president“.
