Through aggressive rhetoric and miscalculations nuclear war can happen by accident. As the Trump-Kim circus founders, escalating military action between India and Pakistan suggests urgency for global denuclearization.

Beyond armistice: women searching for an enduring peace
2 September 2014, by siawi3Women peace activists meeting in Zurich in 1919 understood the capitalist system of profit and privilege as a root cause of war. Women said it then, and say it now, as they tackle the perennial question facing all peace-seekers: what policies can assure a peace that will endure? Today, given the palpable rivalry of corporate interests and their national backers for control of resources and markets, peace activism can scarcely afford to ignore the causality of capitalism in militarization and war.

Women and Post-Conflict Political Order
5 May 2018, by siawi3Empirical analysis demonstrates that 50% of post-civil war power-sharing agreements from 1989 to 2006 saw widespread violence recur within five years. It’s not easy to build a stable political system after a war. But it’s even more difficult if women are left out of the equation. Women are not a panacea for peace, nor are all women innately peaceful. But democracy cannot exist without women’s participation and the participation of other civic actors. Women must be a critical part of post-conflict processes if those processes are to encourage sustainable peace and democratic principles.

Easter Attacks: The days after in Sri Lanka
30 April 2019, by siawi3Devastating are the implications of this attack for Sri Lanka’s post-war society. If international experiences are anything to go by, the response to such attacks has been increased levels of securitisation, surveillance and legal reforms aimed at strengthening the state and military apparatus. Sri Lanka has had a bitter experience of this in the past and what it has meant for ordinary people.

USA: Guns and the Southern Freedom Struggle: What’s Missing When We Teach About Nonviolence
25 September 2014, by siawi3The story of the Freedom Movement is a story of resistance. The “non-nonviolent” Chinn was attracted to and willing to support the nonviolent CORE because he recognized and valued that it was an organization resisting white supremacy. This is more important, more fundamental, than the weapons he often carried. Within this organizing experience, guns in the hands of supporters sometimes existed in tension with the nonviolence usually used to define movement philosophy and practice, but that more often existed in tandem with nonviolence.
