India: Returning Award in protest against lynching of minority people
29 June 2017, by siawi3I return today the National Minority Rights Award conferred on me in 2008 by the National Commission for Minorities. I am returning it in the memory of the innumerable innocent victims lynched by marauding mobs. Lynching has become the unaccountable way of outsourcing state violence to strike fear in minds of minorities. Indian democracy, secularism, pluralism and diversity have their roots in centuries of intermingling of different cultures, philosophical debates, and the legacy of the long struggle for India’s Independence. Democracy and secular thought are built and safeguarded consciously. The divisive politics, interference of religion in the state has to be confronted at every step.

As many of 97% of these attacks were reported after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government came to power in May 2014, and about half the cow-related violence–32 of 63 cases–were from states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when the attacks were reported

India: Hate and prejudice are heavy burdens to put on our children; why not teach them to question?
4 July 2017, by siawi3there are parents who are filling their children’s minds with prejudice and hatred of the other — Muslims, Dalits, dark-skinned people, women, the people from the North East, the LGBT community, and, now, everyone who eats beef. Have you noticed how the list keeps growing? I would like to ask these parents — how are you different from the Islamic fundamentalists teaching children to kill? I am still waiting for some good historical writing from the sanctimonious right that is not based on mythology. The core problem is that genuine intellectuals cannot emerge from organisations that put an emphasis on superstition and obedience.

Facebook hate speech exploded in Myanmar during Rohingya crisis
7 April 2018, by siawi3Experts blame the social network for creating “chaos” in the country. Digital researcher and analyst Raymond Serrato examined about 15,000 Facebook posts from supporters of the hardline nationalist Ma Ba Tha group. The earliest posts dated from June 2016 and spiked on 24 and 25 August 2017, when ARSA Rohingya militants attacked government forces, prompting the security forces to launch the “clearance operation” that sent hundreds of thousands of Rohingya pouring over the border.

Spain: After attacks in Catalunyia, Muslim groups protest against terrorism and against racist attacks against Muslims
26 August 2017, by siawi3Muslim groups have reported a jump in anti-Islamic hate incidents since the twin vehicle attacks in Barcelona and the nearby seaside resort of Cambrils that killed 15 people last week. Those attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group. Two hundred Muslims rallied in the streets of Granada, southern Spain, on Wednesday in protest against a surge in anti-Islamic hate crimes following last week’s deadly attacks in the country. The protest was called after the city’s main mosque was attacked with flares on Saturday by a handful of members from a far-right groupAbout 1,000 Muslims marched in Barcelona on Monday against terrorism.
Only 0.1 percent of the world’s Muslims commit attacks and these people “do not represent our values or our principles”. The protesters brandished banners with slogans such as “I am Muslim and I want to live in peace” and “We also are victims” as they gathered outside Granada city hall. -
