  Le tueur qui se présente comme un blanc de la classe ouvrière aux bas revenus, a publié sur Twitter un « manifeste » raciste de 74 pages intitulé « Le grand remplacement », en référence à une théorie née en France et populaire dans les milieux d’extrême droite selon laquelle les « peuples européens » seraient « remplacés » par des populations non-européennes immigrées. Le document détaille deux années de radicalisation et de préparatifs. Il affirme que les facteurs déterminants dans sa radicalisation ont été la défaite à la présidentielle française de 2017 de la dirigeante d’extrême droite Marine Le Pen et la mort du petit Ebba Åkerlund à 11 ans dans l’attaque au camion-bélier de 2017 à Stockholm.
