We say NO to any re-opening of negotiations on the already established international agreements on women’s human rights. Customs, tradition or religious considerations must not be tolerated to justify discrimination and violence against women and girls whether committed by State authorities or by non-state actors.

Religion, Culture, Tradition and Fundamentalisms at the UN
1 April 2013, by siawi3As fundamentalist forces negotiated and lobbied to stall progress at the CSW, in the meantime in Geneva on March 15th, a group of nine states (Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe) tabled a draft resolution on the “Protection of the Family” which sought to insert the concept of the traditional (that is, patriarchal and heteronormative) family as a subject of human rights protection.

The Catholic Church at the UN: Church or State?
1 April 2013, by siawi3This updated report by Catholics for Choice examines the Vatican’s questionable denomination as a state, the history of its acceptance into the UN, and the ongoing efforts of the Holy See to impose its views on all the globe, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

ISIS’ War on Christmas
21 February 2016, by siawi3Christmas coincided with Mawlid this year, for the first time in centuries. But the happenstance has highlighted the shared features of Islamists and far-rightists, which usually remain hidden. The two camps feed on each other, providing mutual reinforcement. One might counter that of the two groups, only Muslim extremists kill. Which is true, at least when it comes to people. But the extremists of the right kill humanism, and that’s the only thing that could save us all.

The Sexual Misery of the Arab World
21 February 2016, by siawi3The Arab revolutions of 2011 aroused enthusiasm at first, but passions have since waned. Those movements have come to look imperfect, even ugly: For one thing, they have failed to touch ideas, culture, religion or social norms, especially the norms relating to sex. Revolution doesn’t mean modernity.
